Non-standard opening framing
That matters for installation because a house built in the mid-1940s almost never has the rough opening dimensions or header framing that today's factory doors assume. You can buy a door off a shelf and bolt it into a newer house without much thought. Here, the opening is often narrower or shorter than the current standard size, and the jamb may have shifted a fraction over eighty years of settling.
